We visited Escuela Especial Emma Rosa Chuy in Old Havana to deliver aid, meet students, and learn how the blockade is impacting Cuba’s young people.

This school enrolls students with a range of developmental and medical support needs. Due to the blockade, they have struggled to source essential medications and nutritional supports for students, who may also face medication and food shortages at home due to the blockade.

Despite this, our delegation was inspired by the love that the school administration, teachers, and aides have for their students. These young people are continuing to learn and dream about their futures even amid the blockade, demonstrating the widespread resilience of the Cuban people.

During our visit to the Centro Martin Luther King in Marianao, the first Black working-class community in Havana, we had the opportunity to learn about the center’s work in education, faith, and socialist culture.

Popular educator and theologian affirmed, “The leadership of the revolution understood that it wasn’t only about solving material needs, but that minds needed to be changed. That is the key to the success of the Cuban Revolution.”

The Cuban Revolution has invested resources, time, and energy in cultivating ideas, deepening culture, and strengthening Cubans’ sense of self as an emancipatory practice. Cuban society refuses to be re-enslaved or recolonized.

Cuba Sí, Bloqueo No!

We visited Havana’s MLK Center to deliver crucial aid for the community and learn from and with community leaders and theologians at the center. We also visited the ashes of IFCO’s founder, the late Rev. Lucius Walker, which rest at the MLK Center.

Together, we affirmed that throughout our sacred and secular work, the focus is on the agency of people in participating in the struggle for material and spiritual needs. No matter what material obstacles may stand in our way, we must transform our minds and imaginations as we do this work.

As we walk in the legacy of Rev. Walker, we recommit ourselves to the struggle for life and dignity with the Cuban people.
